Tony Williams Dance Center | Ballet Syllabus 2020 | Created by: Anthony Williams, Elizabeth Mochizuki & Amanda Walker
Ballet A 3-4 Year Olds
45 mins per week | Supplement: None required
This is an introduction to the world of dance through a ballet-inspired approach. Much of this class will focus on engaging students in listening, following directions, respecting the dance studio and faculty members and nurturing a love of dance as a proper form of recreation that involves rules, but which is also fun. Fun, music and games are used to casually introduce ballet elements to these very young students. As we are a professionally driven dance studio, those students wishing to participate in strictly “fun dance” should consider our Creative Movement A/B class. While all dance is “fun” this is a focused endeavor and should be treated seriously. During the first class a parent may wish to walk the child into the room to meet the teacher and to detach. After the first 15 minutes all parents should please exit the room. We have found that lingering chaperones prevent the child from attaching fully to their dance teacher which causes year-long issues. We usually keep the blinds closed in early level ballet classes for the following reasons: a) students continuously peer out to see if a chaperone is watching them which distracts from the class activities, b) students who see a parent want to leave class causing further distraction, c) students whose families are not watching them begin wondering why their parent isn’t watching if other parents are watching. While we attempt to make all of our classroom procedures public and out-in-the-open please follow our advice on protocol for watching/leaving students during class so that they can learn as much as possible in the short time provided. All Ballet A classes with registrations over 8 students will require a Teacher’s Assistant. All Ballet classes with registrations over 16 students will require 1 faculty member and two TA’s for the safety of your child.
WARM UP (On Floor)
Warm up in circle – Includes various games/isolations ending with a song/dance staying in circle
Teachers should incorporate group games and fun adventures for the children that are rooted in movement, and ballet, in general.
Stretching and Strengthening in circle – Again these are fun exercises, this time can also be used to help them get used to raising their hands if they want to contribute
CENTER
Beginning ballet exercises: learn 6th, 1st, 2nd positions, demi plie, tendu in 6th and side, pique in 6th, eleve and relevé, tip toe turns, sautes, port de bras
Next: a song to get them moving around the room and returning to their mats.
On Diagonal: marching, galloping, chasse, skipping, running on tip toes, running backwards
Then some sort of creative movement activity like scarves or bear hunt.
End with curtsies/ bows on the diagonal and stickers for good dancers, this is the first step toward establishing reverence for the ballet communal space.

Ballet B 5-6 Year Olds
1 hour per week | Supplement: None required
Continue to use fun and creative exercises while also introducing the basic vocabulary in this transition class. You may continue to include fun and playful music into class. Start with a warm up sitting in a circle on the floor. Center work should work on making straight lines, and introducing 2 lines with attention to spacing. Honors Intermediate Ballet
This track is taken in supplement to your ballet Level or in place of one of your weekly classes ie. Those in Intermediate Ballet I would take one or both of their weekly Intermediate Ballet I classes on Tuesday/Thursday AS WELL AS Honors Intermediate Ballet. At this level you are required to take ballet at least twice per week, though this is recommended as your third ballet class for the week.
1 hour per week
Description: This is a specialty class by invitation only to garner the needed elements of dance through specialized small group training so that those invited may be able to progress more appropriately along the ballet track.in order to catch up to or distance themselves from their age group to have specialized instruction, instead, within their technique level group. This class’s syllabi will be written yearly to focus on the needs of those invited.
Additional Requirements: None
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
Recreational Ballet/ Jazz (C-Senior Levels)
This is a non ballet track combo class offered to students wishing to continue ballet training in a more relaxed atmosphere. There are no requirements beyond taking this one class once per week. This class offering is taught by a professional performing jazz dancer for the last 25 years. This can be taken in conjunction with your ballet track as well for more varied content. Recreational ballet/jazz will focus on the elements of the dance necessary for performance rather than beginning with barre, following to center and then choreography. You will begin with dance stretching and follow through with dance combinations using ballet terminology already in your repertoire. You may be evaluated during the year before 12/1 if you wish to return to a ballet track training program. After 12/1 you must stay with the class assigned for the year or return next year. While this class is less structured than a ballet track training program, it is still a serious place and must be respected. This class is the perfect start for older students who don’t have a ballet background, but who wish to learn dance in general.
Additional Requirements: None, but lyrical is very strongly encouraged as a supplement and is offered before or after this class offering each week.
